Girl Power: Kamie Halfmann's Track Career is Off and Running 5/24/13

For many of us, getting up in the morning and running a couple miles is something we have to force ourselves to do.

But, Kamie Halfmann has a simple reason as to why she enjoys long distance running.

"Probably just because I'm better at it than short distance," she said with a shurg. "I'm better at keeping my pace and stuff."

Okay, I gotta give her that: things are definitely more fun when you are good at them. So I asked her coach Chris Sumrall: what is it about Kamie that enables her to be a successful runner?

"First off she's very talented," he said simply. "She's a gifted athlete. The second thing is she's a very competitive young lady. She wants to compete. You've gotta be pretty tough the mind can wander. You've gotta have a pretty intense concentration."

So that explains how Kamie seems to rise to the occasion. When she returned from the track and field state championships, she had not one, but two gold medals around her neck.

"I've always wanted that state title, but at the beginning of the year I really didn't think I'd have two," Kamie said with a giggle. "A lot of people were really proud of me and I've always wanted that and two is really exciting."

"It's very exciting to see that the first time, and then the second time you're just like, 'Wow!'" Sumrall exclaimed.

I asked Kamie how she is going to beat her two gold medals at state next year and even she was having a hard time thinking how to top that. She finally said, "Just beat my own times."

I guess that's all you can do when you're on top.

This is the best round, I've ever done!" she exclaimed remembering what it felt like to have everything go right. "I was like okay, trying not to freak out right now."

We all know the saying: good things come to those who wait. It seems like Lynley was simply waiting for the opportune moment.

"It has been a roller coaster ride for Lynley and the game of golf," said her coach at Midland Christian Kevin Wallum. "One day it's going great. The next she's saying, 'Coach! I hate golf!' But she hung with it."

"I was like this senior year, I'm going to finish strong, I'm going to get my 80, and I'm going to break it," Lynley shared. "That was one of my goals coming into this year. And actually at regionals I shot an 84, which was encouraging and I thought, 'Okay, I can do better than that!'"

"She seemed to be playing better at the end of the year," said Green Tree Golf Pro and Midland Christian assistant Stuart Hendley. "So, we weren't surprised she played like that, but to have that kind of round on the final day was just awesome."

It was on that final round of her high school career in the TAPPS State Tournament that Lynley did better than shoot 80: her final score was a 77.

"I said coach, I'm gonna shoot in the 70s tomorrow," she remembered. "I'm gonna do it."

"I was just trying to keep her forward thinking instead of what's happening," Wallum said, "and at one point she said, 'Coach! What's happening!?' And I said, 'You're playing like you're supposed to.'"

"I could hardly stay in my cart!" Hendley said enthusiastically. "I just wanted to jump out of my cart go over and say, 'Yeah!' For a girl that's never broke 80 in a tournament, that's just incredible."

At the end of her season, it wasn't Lynley's putting, chipping or driving that made the difference. It was simply finding confidence in her game.

"She started to believe it, and on those days she believed it, magical things can happen," Wallum said with a smile. "That final round was magical...it really was."

"That was the best feeling," Lynley said. "Knowing that I had said at the beginning of the year that I was going to break 80, that I was going to have a great round.
